Waseda University may have an answer to recycle carbon fiber! Their researchers have developed an innovative electrical pulse technique for recycling carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs), an essential material in our high-tech world. Used extensively in aerospace, automotive and sports equipment industries, these materials are notoriously hard to recycle due to the high costs and environmental impact of current methods. But our heroes from Waseda University have changed the game!
How it Sparks:
Professor Chiharu Tokoro and his team have taken matters into their own hands and aimed to better the world by changing CFRP recycling. Electrohydraulic fragmentation, which relies on shockwave impulses, was all well and good, but Tokoro and team wondered if they could do even better. Their 'direct discharge electrical pulse' method applies Joule heating and vapor expansion of the material itself, making the process far more efficient than the old shockwave way.

The fantastic research team from Waseda University discovered their method was not just more efficient in separating materials, it also left the planet smiling! The new method recovers quality carbon fibers while decreasing environmental impact and promoting resource utilization. In terms of energy efficiency, their approach is at least 10 times better than the traditional alternatives.
