Chasing Death by Plastic:
File this under "Ways We Didn't Realize We Were Sabotaging Ourselves." So, besides suffocating sea turtles and ruining beach selfies, plastics have a new nefarious notch on their belt: they're secretly vying for the title of "Serial Heart Murderer."
The Fatal Attraction:
In a rather sobering "take" on our love affair with plastic, researchers at NYU are dishing out some heavy paperweights on our conscience. They've linked chemicals found in our everyday plastics to those nasty, leading-cause-of-death worldwide, heart diseases. This fun fact suggests that in 2018 alone, over a cheerful 356k heart disease deaths could have been patterned by our trusty household items. In other words, that's a mind-boggling 13% of heart disease-related deaths among Gen X-ers across the globe.
The Prime Suspect: DEHP:
The study's main antagonist is the oddly cute-sounding di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). This is used to make our Tupperware softer and our medical equipment more flexible. But, spoiler alert: it's got the side gig of inflaming arteries, upping heart attack and stroke susceptibility. Researchers determined DEHP exposure levels by analyzing population surveys from across the globe.
Urgent need for Reform:
There's a compelling call for global regulations to play watchdog against these harmful toxins. Our health is clutching its vest and gasping rapidly, especially in rapidly industrializing regions like the Middle East, South Asia, East Asia, and the Pacific. Dr. Trasande from NYU underlines the need to trim down our exposure to these onslaughts.
Room for Skepticism:
Medical professionals agree that it's about time to rethink our chemical love affairs. However, there’s a cautious note in the wind; the study does come with limitations, like ignoring variations in lifestyles, other types of phthalates, and death rates across other age groups.
Plastic, Take a Bow:
The researchers are chalking plans to investigate how reducing phthalate exposure could affect mortality rates — and maybe we should wire them some encouragement. Until then, it might be wise to give those thick glasses you've been ignoring in the cupboard a chance. After all, as climactic movie endings have taught us, the unsuspected assistant you disregarded might just save your day, or in this case, your heart.
