Fire Breaks Out Again at California Battery Plant:
California’s Moss Landing Power Plant, one of the world's largest battery storage facilities, experienced a reignition of a fire on Friday, leading to the evacuation of up to 1,500 residents and significant highway and school closures. This Texas-based facility owned by Vistra Corp stores thousands of lithium batteries crucial for storing electricity generated from renewable sources.
Lithium-Ion Battery Fires Prove Stubborn:
Interestingly, fighting fires at facilities like these is far from simple. Thanks to a rather fiery natural phenomenon known as thermal runaway, when lithium-ion batteries combust, they can trigger a series of escalating fires that require large amounts of water to suppress. Plus, to make matters even more challenging, the fires can regenerate their own oxygen and release harmful gases, such as hydrogen fluoride, prolonging their burn. The batteries potentially remain unstable for days, with a persistent risk of reignition.
The Need for Safer Systems:
This event has been deemed a disaster by Glenn Church, a Monterey county supervisor, who calls it a wake-up call for the industry. Asserting that moving ahead with sustainable energy requires safe battery systems in place, he criticises this being the fourth fire at the site since 2019. Both of the plant's battery operations have experienced fires, and Church firmly states that this must be the last one. The county board of supervisors held an emergency meeting to update the situation and decided to keep the facility offline until its safety can be guaranteed.
No Immediate Threat to Human Health:
As of Friday evening, the evacuation orders were lifted by the Monterey county sheriff’s office following an environmental agencies' assessment that deemed there was no immediate threat to human health from the smoke. However, the Monterey Bay Air Resources District expressed caution, indicating a deficient capability to test for hydrofluoric acid, a toxic air pollutant associated with emissions from lithium battery fires.
The cause of this latest fire remains unclear. Once the fire is completely extinguished, a thorough investigation will begin. Despite the disastrous event, everyone on site was safely evacuated, with safety remaining the top priority for Vistra Corp.
