What's Buzzing at NOAA?:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), one of the globe's top climate science agencies, has been asked to single out all its grants related to climate change. This call comes from President Trump's administration, sparking concerns that the identified grants may be up for scrapping.
Identifying Climate-Related Grants:
This directive came last Thursday from the Commerce Department, under which NOAA falls. The NOAA family was asked to flag grants that could be "potentially impacted" by any of Mr. Trump's mentionable orders. These include a directive aimed at terminating federal government programs that combat climate change. Terms like "climate science," "climate crisis," "clean energy," "environmental quality" and "pollution" are to be flagged. Can you imagine playing hide and seek with those terms?
Blueprint for Climate Action?:
Project 2025, created by the Heritage Foundation, has been referenced in many actions by the Trump administration. This document even singles out NOAA as one of the prime movers of the "climate change alarm industry." Besides recommending the disassembly of NOAA and termination of some of its programs, it also encourages privatizing the National Weather Service. Talk about shaking things up affably!
Exploring Diverse Interests:
NOAA has quite the gamut of interests; it funds scientific work on topics varying from atmospheric science to the oceanic study, Arctic research, wildfires, and more. It also takes care of satellite operations, weather data provision, hurricane path predictions, and offshore fisheries regulation. That's a lot of hats to wear, isn't it?
Trouble in NOAA-ville?:
This move to identify climate-related grants follows recent news that a group from the Department of Government Efficiency gained access to NOAA’s computer systems. Democrats have voiced their disapproval, urging the nominated commerce secretary, Mr. Howard Lutnick, to shield NOAA against these "unlawful attacks." Seems like there's never a dull moment over at NOAA!
