Cheers to Clean Water: Trump Administration Nears Decision on Limiting PFAS in Drinking Water [SWOP NEWS]

PFAS in the Limelight

In one of our very recent news update we complained that the Trump administration is prioritizing PFAS in straws over drinking water. The administration is soon to publish whether it's going to adhere to strict drinking water norms set last year for PFAS, the chemicals many of us didn't know we were consuming. Brace yourselves, verdict is coming.

PFAS: A Vice that Slipped Past Everyone's Nose:

PFAS, or "forever chemicals," stick around the environment and human bodies. Large corporates like Chemours and 3M manufactured these substances, which found their way into firefighting foam, clothing, and drinking water. Last year, the Environmental Protection Agency got around to setting federal drinking standards for these persistent pests, noting their effects such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and low birth weight in babies.

The Balancing Act on Tap:

PFAS has been the unwelcome ingredient in 12% of U.S. water utilities. But kicking them out isn't simple. For one, reducing PFAS costly, which could add to residents' watr bills. Second, it raises questions about what's a justified action when it comes to regulation changes and resident costs.

Regulations Re-evaluated:

PFAS standards set by the Biden administration are being re-evaluated. The deadline for water utilities to meet these new standards is 2029, but there's a high possibility of exemptions and deadline extensions. If levels of PFAS were allowed to rise, it could leave people confused, especially in areas where public concern already surfaced.

The Future Forecast:

The adversity here isn't just PFAS, but also a convoluted web of regulation and monetary costs. There are several paths the Trump administration could tread here: they could uphold the strict standards, rewrite them for leniency, or adopt the "let's-see-how-it-goes" approach. But remember, when you play the game of PFAS, you drink clean or you die –– or in this case, face some serious health risks.
