Climate Change Hello Again:
In a (not so) surprising move, US President Donald Trump has announced the country's second withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, sending notice to the United Nations. This comes just as the world is feeling the impacts of a worsening climate crisis, as seen in the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.
Joining a Climate Change Trio:
Once this formal withdrawal process is completed - a process likely to take around one year - the US will join Iran, Libya, and Yemen as the only countries outside the global climate pact. This pact, under the Paris Agreement, seeks to substantially mitigate the effects of global warming and climate change.
Climate Agreement or Rip-Off?
President Trump called the agreement a "unfair one-sided Paris climate accord rip-off," as he signed the executive order to exit the Paris Agreement on stage at an event held in Washington DC.
Expanding the Fossil Fuel Industry:
During his second presidential term, Trump also plans to reverse efforts to promote the growth of the US's clean energy sector. Instead, the administration is promising to remove all restrictions on the country's burgeoning fossil fuel industry, aiming for higher domestic production of oil.
Climate Concerns Demand Unity:
Climate advocates have voiced their concerns on the US withdrawing from the Paris Agreement, saying that unity is needed more than ever to combat climate change. The impact of such a decision by a major polluter like the US under a climate skeptic like Trump, they warn, will likely be felt most harshly by developing nations.
Leadership Beyond the Oval Office:
Now, climate advocates and others concerned about the environment hope that US cities, states, and other leaders will continue to push the transition to cleaner energy. This move comes despite what they view as complacency at the federal level.
