United Utilities Won't Fess Up About Poop in Windermere

United Utilities Refuses to Hand Over Poop Data [SWOP NEWS]

United Utilities, a water company in the UK, has been accused of illegally dumping raw sewage into Lake Windermere. The company has been under scrutiny for its handling of sewage discharges, particularly at the Glebe Road pumping station, which discharges directly into the lake.

Investigation and Non-Compliance:
The Environment Agency (EA) has launched a complex and ongoing investigation into the sewage discharges from October 2023. The EA has stated that if any water company is found to be in breach of an environmental permit, they will take appropriate enforcement action, including criminal prosecution.

Data Requests:
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has ordered United Utilities to improve its handling of requests for environmental information following complaints about a lack of transparency. The company has been accused of withholding data on sewage spills and performance of its wastewater treatment works.

BBC Analysis:
An analysis by the BBC found that United Utilities pumped between 143 million to 286 million litres of raw sewage into Windermere between 2021 and 2023, with at least 102 million litres not reported to regulators.

Public Outcry:
The lake is considered a cultural and environmental treasure, with significant historical and ecological importance. Campaigners like Matt Staniek of Save Windermere have called for immediate action to end pollution in Windermere, labeling it an "open sewer".

Company Response:
United Utilities has reported all discharges, including potential non-compliant discharges, to the Environment Agency through their reporting processes and liaison meetings. However, the company's handling of these incidents has been criticized for downplaying the severity of pollution events.

Regulatory Actions:
The ICO’s enforcement measure against United Utilities is unprecedented and highlights the need for greater transparency in water company operations. The EA is working closely with local communities and partners to reduce pollution from various sources, including recent improvements to sewage treatment works.
