Trash Talk: Manufacturer Slammed with $8.25m Fine for False Recycling Claims [SWOP NEWS]

Oh Snap! Giant Trash Bag Company Fined for Misleading 'Green' Claims:

In a twist on the tale, Clorox, a company known for manufacturing GLAD garbage bags, has been unfortunately caught out. The company made false claims about using 50% recycled plastic from ocean waste for their bags, leading to an $8.25 million fine slapped on them by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

The Not-So-Green Greenwashing:

Between June 2021 and July 2023, Clorox proclaimed that the kitchen and trash bags were fashioned out of 50% recycled plastic plucked from the ocean. The reality, however, was a stark disconnect. The bags were actually made from recycled plastic sourced from communities in Indonesia, which in many cases, were up to 50km away from the shore.

Pricey Plastic with False Promises:

During this scandalous period, over 2.2 million bags were sold, with each item marked at an elevated price compared to the company's regular range of kitchen bags. After the consumer watchdog launched an investigation, Clorox swiftly discontinued the supply of this questionably 'earth-friendly' line of products in Australia.

Settling the Score with a Sincere(?) Apology:

Clorox acknowledged their misleading "50% ocean plastic recycled" tags and agreed to cooperate with the ACCC over the penalty. The Federal court judge, Penelope Neskovcin, held Clorox accountable for greenwashing and enforced the $8.25 million fine.

She maintained that customers may have turned to concrete environmentally beneficial products or cheaper alternatives had they not been misled. Judge Neskovcin also highlighted that Clorox only discussed recycled plastics with its supplier Oceanworks and mistook "ocean-bound’ plastics as a type of ocean plastic.

Actions Speak Louder than Words:

In addition to the hefty fine, Clorox has been instructed to bear $200,000 of the consumer watchdog's legal expenses and issue a corrective note apologising to consumers and elucidating the misdeed. The company assured that they took their duty to market products with precise claims seriously and viewed this as an opportunity for better-enhanced practices and renewed commitment towards products that aid in decreasing environmental impact.

In a world worrying over its carbon footprint, this story serves as a polite reminder that a safe environment isn't just a claim to make, but a promise to keep.
