Nigeria Joins the Pangolin Protection Posse! [SWOP NEWS]

Nigeria Stepping Up to Protect Pangolins:

There's an appreciative nod headed Nigeria's way, as the West African country shows a dedicated enforcement effort towards the illegal trade of pangolins. These adorable scaly mammals, whose population is dwindling in Asia, are fuelling traffickers to look to Africa. Now critically endangered, Nigerian authorities are answering the crisis call, cracking down on the illegal trade, and making notable arrests.

A Hub for Illegal Pangolin Trade:

Nigeria has, unfortunately, been a hub for pangolin and other wildlife trafficking. However, their resolve is clear and shining through. Recent law enforcement activities led to the arrest of a suspected high-level Chinese pangolin trafficker and dismantling of a supply network in Lagos. This impactful action resulted in an additional five arrests and the rescue of approximately 1,900 pangolins.

Enforcing Protection for Endangered Animals:

Regional customs chief, Michael Awe, was emphatic about their commitment, promising they will not relent in their fight against wildlife crime. These enforcement strides are proof that the country’s increasing effort to combat animal trafficking is reaping rewards.

Collaborative efforts Making a Difference:

The Wildlife Justice Commission, a Netherlands-based organization, supplied invaluable intelligence to Nigerian authorities. This international cooperation sets a powerful example, reflecting a consistent effort to go beyond the surface and target the heart of the illegal wildlife trade.

Nigeria’s crackdown on wildlife crimes is a major beacon of hope. With these strides, the future looks brighter for the cute pangolins, and a signal is sent out to the world - wildlife crimes will not be tolerated. The fight against illegal wildlife trafficking continues!
