Chemical Industry Seeks Permission to Stretch Pollution Boundaries Under Trump [SWOP NEWS]

Possible Pollution Pass:

Two leading industry groups, the American Chemistry Council and the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, are seeking President Trump's okay for a temporary waiver from new pollution limits. This move comes in light of the rules passed by the Biden administration last year that required chemical plants to police and pare down toxin output, such as ethylene oxide, a mischievous molecule that's been found to bring about cancer and is used in antifreeze and plastics.

Hazardous Hold-up:

Laying across the line are the freshly inked regulations, which according to the concerned parties, have been chugging along with "significantly costly requirements on an unworkable timeline." The finger of accusation points the expenses for compliance in parts more northwards of $50 billion, counterarguing the Environmental Protection Agency’s estimate of $1.8 billion.

Waiver Comeback:

This industry appeal is in direct response to the E.P.A's announcement last month, which called on all companies to throw in their requests for waivers to major clean-air rules. Tucking under its ambit too, lies a provision of the Clean Air Act that brings the power to temporarily exempt industrial facilities from new rules into the President's hands. This only happens on the assumption that the rules would not be technologically feasible and would potentially put national security at the edge of risk.
